Spring is in the Hair

The weather is getting warmer every day and the ground is bursting with new life! It's time to get yourself some happy, sunny accessories to match the change in the weather, don't you think?

I got such a nice response to my fabric flower brooches and headbands at the last Handmade Revolution show that I got all inspired and have made some new ones! I've been tweaking the design a bit and am quite happy with the results.

Many of them will be available on my etsy shop this this week. (Hopefully I can post a few tomorrow while my little guy is napping!) I'm happy to make custom orders if there is a certain color/size you'd like to request. Just leave me a note in the comments section and I'll get in touch!

Born September 27th, 2009, he is already 5 months old! Gee Whiz, time flies!

Anywho, thought I should introduce you all to the little goober, as he's a very important part of my life these days. I'm slowly getting back into crafting and, boy, does it feel good to get those creative juices flowing again! I'm hoping to keep things a bit livelier around these parts now that I'm starting to get a handle on this "mommy" business. It's a mighty tricky balance, though.

In the meantime, check out my on-going project over at The Handmade Revolution. It's a stellar group of 8-ish women and we host regular trunk shows throughout the year. The next show is April 24th and I'm super excited about the new designs I'm working on. I'll try to give you some sneak peaks over the next few weeks. With any luck, I'll have some new items for sale in my handmade etsy shop this week (granted the little guy keeps taking consistent naps!).

I'm in a bit of a posting frenzy these days, as my vintage stash has gotten a wee bit overwhelming as of late, not to mention I'm only days away from giving birth to our first child (well, let's hope it's only days). With some helpful nudging from my dear husband, it's become clear that we need to swap out the vintage goodies to make a bit of room for the new little one.

So, I'm doing my darndest to post everything I've got in the next few days in hopes that all you vintage-lovin' folks might find something that catches your eye! I'm even parting with many items that have been in my personal collection for years. It's time to give my treasures a new home! If you see anything you can't live with out, but perhaps the price doesn't strike your fancy, please contact me. I'm open to wheelin' and dealin'! Let's get this stuff cleared out, folks!

Newly Noveled

So it seems like ages since we last posted about our little pet project, but we've finally got some new Novel Novels in the shop. They are a stellar collection, so go check 'em out!

For you folks who are new to the world of Novel Novels, here's a quick intro:

Novel Novels are blank sketchbooks and journals, made from discarded library books. Each is one-of-a-kind, completely unique. We take discarded library books (most of them kids books), and carefully remove the pages. Then we lovingly hand-stitch new paper into the binding. We ONLY use high-quality paper and archival quality bookbinders glue.

We also include a few choice illustrations, scattered throughout the blank book, and we ALWAYS include the card catalog pocket, if available.

Let's Get Cookin'

Just a few things I've produced in my kitchen over the last few months. Not super crafty, but I felt inclined to share none-the-less. The "bun in my oven" seems to crave very specific things these days, causing me to bake furiously regardless of when the cravings strike. Those pretzels below were pulled out of the oven at 11pm the other night. Sometimes I just can't help myself.

My First Quilt

As some of you already know, I'm currently 5 months pregnant. Now that I'm over the icky, sicky first trimester, I've had a fabulous surge in energy and gumption! It's been a welcome change.

As my husband and I start to delve into the world of "baby stuff", it's becoming more and more apparent that there is only a teeny-tiny fraction of all the baby gizmos, gadgets, decor, and general tom-foolery in this world that actually appeal to us and/or seem useful. So we've been brainstorming all the fun things we can make ourselves at home from our personal stash of craft supplies and fabric.

I spotted a beautiful baby quilt by onegirl on the LMNOP blog the other day and was instantly inspired! Granted, I've never attempted a quilt before, but once I get a hare-brained idea lodged into my mind, it usually doesn't ease up until I've either accomplished my task or proven to myself that it's out of my league. So Thursday afternoon I went to a bookstore and bought a lovely how-to book of baby quilts (with a welcome laid-back, less severe approach than most of the quilting books available) and jumped right in. (I used the pattern on page 45, with some of my own moderate adaptions.)

I ransacked my fabric stash and found some pretty fabrics, but promptly decided I needed a bit more (you can never have too much fabric, right?!), so I popped over to this amazing quilt shop just a few minutes from my house and bought a few basic supplies and some fabric.

Three lovely days later, I've got a finished project! It was so invigorating to immerse myself in a project, that I could barely tear myself away for even a minute. I even worked in bed for about an hour last night after getting back from a movie, furiously embroidering until my eyes just wouldn't stay open anymore.

I couldn't be happier with it! Sure, it's got some minor flaws and I definitely will do things a bit different on my next attempt, but overall it's just so exciting to have persevered and made something beautiful for our little baby-to-be!

Etsy Storque Spotlight

The NovelNovel was featured on today's Etsy Finds! What a fun surprise to find an inbox stuffed with orders this afternoon!

We recently bought a huge new crop of vintage book delights and I've been working like a busy, busy bee, so it's fun to see them get featured by Etsy. And I've expanded the binding process, so I'm able to use a larger variety of books now. Such fun!

PS I know I fell off the radar for a bit, but (for now) I've overcome my little motivation problem. So, I'll post the rest of my "Beautiful Things" project over the next few days.

New NovelNovels

Matt posted a new batch of NovelNovels to the shop this evening. There are some really awesome ones!

I've been experiementing with different types of binding and so far my attempts have been successful. I need to do a few more tests, but if they work, then it seems that a whole new world of books will open up to us and I won't be limited to just kids books with library-binding. Look out world, The NovelNovel is about to explode!

This weekend my "Beautiful Thing #4" was a collaboration with my lovely husband. For some time now he's been working on a visual Exploration of the Western Shorter Catechism. A mighty undertaking, I assure you. So this weekend he asked for my assistance and I was happy to oblige--I love working on projects with him!

We spent much of Saturday afternoon holed up next-to and inside-of a culvert in a local canyon, wiring twigs and branches, scouring for plant debris, getting funny looks from passerbys, and generally having an all-around good time. For as often as we talk about creating potential works of "installation art," it was nice to actually get out and do it! It was a small project in scope, but very satisfying none-the-less.

Yellow Confusion

Today's "Beautiful Thing" is not something that I created in a single day, but rather a project that I was inspired to finally complete. I've had this vision in my head for awhile, but wasn't sure how to execute it. I stumbled on this photo several weeks ago [via OutsaPop] and was so taken in by it. Such loveliness...So inspiring...

I'd envisioned a necklace featuring those same twists and turns. I painstakingly made several tubes of fabric stuffed with poly-fil a few weeks ago, but I wasn't sure how to finish the look.

Then last night I was getting ready to go hear John Meeks in concert and got a hare-brained idea that I had to finish this project immediately and incorporate it into my outfit. Surely you creative types know what I'm talking about. That sudden and undeniable urge to create that blind-sides you and leaves you helpless to do anything but tackle your idea right then and there. I find this happens often with jewelry. If I don't have just the right pair of earrings to wear, I decide that the only solution is to sit down immediately and make a pair to match my outfit. Of course this always makes me late to wherever I'm going, but I get such a high from having made something that I find it's worth it. (Open apology to all my friends and family--Sorry I'm always late.)

So that's how "Beautiful Thing #3" came to be:

It's just a proto-type and still a work-in-progress, but I'm quite happy with the result. I'd like to make them using white and gray jersey fabric, and wearing them with a simple t-shirt. A nice excuse to visit the fabric store anyway. If I get really ambitious (which is my goal these days!), I'll make some to sell in my handmade etsy shop. I think they'd be a nice compliment to my fabric earrings. We'll just have to wait and see what happens...

It Grows More Than Six Feet in Height

I am by no means an "artist" in the proper sense of the word. I prefer to lable myself as a "crafty dabbler" flitting to and fro among the crafty-arts, occasionally hitting upon something that suits my fancy. I've never been good at drawing, but I've happily doodled my way through many a lecture in college. All that to say that today's "Beautiful Thing" is not actually all that beautiful, but it was a labor of love and spontanaeity. I've seen so many people use pages from old books as drawing paper, so I thought I'd give it a try. I've got loads of it laying about from making Novel Novels, so here's what I came up with. It's mostly just scribbles, but it was fun to make.

Confession

As apparent from my utter lack of posts the last few months, I've had SO LITTLE motivation to do anything. Seriously, from the state of my bedroom and kitchen sink, you'd think an utter slob had moved in and taken over the joint. (I'm a very fortunate woman to be married to a man as loving and patient as my amazing husband!) I became a full-time housewife last fall and it's been a much more difficult transition than I ever imagined it could be. For so many years I've dreamt of a time like this--a time in my life to pursue my passions, write my memoirs, tackle major craft projects, learn to knit/crochet/sew(better)/macrame/fill-in-the-blank, and take time to be an all-around better, more joyful person. But suddenly, when this dream became reality, BAM!--I'm paralyzed. I find myself completely out of sorts, listless, un-motivated, AND to my utter despair, I'VE BECOME BORING!!! Yikes kites! What's happened to me?

I can chalk it up to me being a people person (which spells disaster when I'm faced with spending all day by myself) and being pregnant (12 weeks along--whohoo!), but it's gone beyond the point of ridiculousness. Ultimately, I need to take responsibility and become the inventive, silly, fun-loving person I know I've got hiding inside of me. It's time to get craftin' again, by golly!

So in a new resolution and determination to keep The Tilted Tulip alive and kickin', I've decided to create one "beautiful thing" every day for the next ten days to jump-start my motivation.

Now that my deep-dark confession is out of the way, I present my first "Beautiful Thing":

FRYE Campus Boots // Ebay Listing

Baking Pies

I've been elbow-deep in lovely pie crust dough all evening. I was fortunate to marry into a family with some incredible traditions, the best of those traditions being PIE NIGHT. Yes, folks, you read correctly. There is a day of the year which my beloved in-laws devote entirely to the incredibly amazing, all-American, perfectly round delicacy that is PIE. Oh my, oh my, oh my-- I love pie. (So much that I'm declaring my devotion through rhyme, apparantly!)

It occurs on the night before Thanksgiving and it is the holiest of holidays in my book. It's simply the best! As we're not able to fly home this year, we're hosting our own Californian version of Pie Night. So far we've got 15 pies coming (and their makers, too, of course)! I'll follow with more details and pictures soon, but I'm just so excited I can't help but share my joy with all you lovely folks. With any luck, Pie Night will catch on and someday become a national holiday.

Craft Sale

It's been a bit silent here at The Tilted Tulip recently 'cause I spent much of last week being super crafty and getting everything ready for a craft sale I took part in this last weekend. It was my first craft sale and it was definitely a good learning experience. The crowd was not what I expected it to be, but I still ended up selling some items and making a small profit.

The best part was that in the scramble to get everything ready in time for this sale, I now have a HUGE stock of items fresh and ready to go in my etsy store just in time for the holiday shopping frenzy. It's about time I unveiled some of my handmade goodies! I've got lots and lots of fabric earrings, holiday gift tags and ornaments, new Novel Novels, and a few more vintage treasures to post over the next few days.

Holy Moley--I can't believe it's nearly 2009! It's that time of year (with my birthday just around the corner!) when I realize that the pages of my calendar are getting sparse. This year I've had the pleasure of glancing daily at a lovely calendar from happify, a very talented etsy seller. Here is her calendar happily displayed in my house:

I've been gettin' all crafty in these last few weeks and have been making tons of fabric earrings, felt bags, and embroidered ornaments, but when I go to post these items in my etsy store, they don't mix well with the vintage items.

Thus, I'm opening a second etsy store, aptly titled "Tilted Tulip *VINTAGE*"!

Over the next few weeks I'll be moving all my vintage items to this new location, as well as any new vintage items will be listed in this new store. So I'll start to list all my handmade goodies in the old shop. I've put alot of energy into my vintage store and I think I'm starting to get my act together, so now it's time to properly spread my wings and dip my toe into the wonderful world of handmade etsy, as well. I've been meaning to join the flickr group Wardrobe_Remix for ages now, but just haven't. I think that day has come. I'll start by posting my looks here on The Tilted Tulip. This skirt that I'm wearing is one of my all-time favorite thrift store finds. I bought it back in highschool to wear in the musical Grease. I was Frenchie. I wasn't very good. It brings back funny memories to think of those days...

Estate Sale Finds

After moving to the West Coast last year, I remembering being mildly disappointed at the thrift stores in my neighborhood. I'm from the MidWest, notorious for it's thrift stores, and I was hoping for no less when I moved to California. I think MidWest thrift stores have so many gems simply due to the fact that people have the storage space to hold on to absolutely EVERYTHING from birth to death, and as frugality is bred into most of us from the moment we take our first breath, we save, save, save every bit of anything we've ever owned. And someday, all those piles and piles of saved "junk" make their way into thrift stores. There are so many genuine vintage gems to be found in the MidWest.

I've found some good "thriftin'" spots over the past year here, but in San Diego specifically, thrift stores tend to be a bit picked over. If you're looking for higher-end, name brand clothes, there are some very nice items to be found as San Diegans tend to have expensive taste (like the time I found a gorgeous $350 Dooney & Burke handbag for a mere $4.99), but those "holy-crap-I-can't-believe-I-just-found-this-(fill in the blank)" vintage items can be few and far between, and then often expensive. I usually have to go to 3-4 thrift stores in San Diego to find what I can often find in just 1 MidWest thrift store visit.

But that all changed the moment I went to my first Southern California Estate Sale. If you're looking for more than just clothes, the estate sales here tend to be fabulous, full of delightful odds and ends from often well-traveled, well-to-do folks. Authentic vintage dishes, books, toys, clothes, craft supplies, etc. are soooo easy to find at these estate sales and tend to be reasonably priced for the most part. For example, this last week I hit up an especially good one and left with such great finds!

Just like during college when the weekend actually started on Thurdsay, I find this to be true in the world of garage and estate sales, as well. Although items tend to be the priciest on Thursdays, that's when you find the best stuff before it gets picked over. Usually I find my self the youngest soul by 30-odd years or so, pillaging the mountains of stuff along with a handful of the gray-haired population. This last week I happened upon two sales that were mostly stocked with craft supplies and fabric (my favorite kind of sale!!!). I added to my growing collection of craft/sewing books and I just had to share my findings:

"Sewing Book" by Better Homes & Gardens

[Tucked in the back sleeve of this book were a handful of newspaper clippings detailing different "trendy" styles and how-to's on recreating the look.]

Oh my! Oh my! Oh my! At long last, the pony express dropped off my long awaited cargo! A few weeks ago I ordered a vintage floral tapestry suitcase from CorkSpork on Etsy and it finally arrived to my glee and delight. It's just perfect! (I would apologize for all the exclamation points I'm inflicting on you, but I'm just too excited to care!!!)

Oh my, I can hardly wait for my next trip so that I can take this sweet vintage gem as a carry-on! In the meantime I think I'll use it as my laptop bag. Gives me a proper excuse to go to a coffeeshop, just so I can show-off my newest friend! (Ok, y'all are gonna think I'm a lonely hermit by the way I talk about all my "stuff" as my friends and never actually mention my real-live human friends. First it was Miss Betty Draper and now Mr Cary Grant Carry-On... but I just can't help it! These vintage goodies make me grin! I do have human friends...I promise.)

And to top it all off, the lovely CorkSpork included an extra little blue n' orange bag she had lying around. CorkSpork, you're the best! Thanks again!

I've been scouring craigslist and ebay in vain for sometime now hoping to find a ridiculously cheap dress form. At a garage sale yesterday morning, I found a vintage dress form, (adjustable no less!), for a mere $15. Yippee!

Sadly this dress form had seen better days, but that didn't stop me. After a quick trip to the paint store and the craft store, I was ready to get down to business fixing up my new best friend. Using some old vintage fabric I'd had for ages, plenty of hot glue gun action, and lots of elbow grease, I was able to transform this rugged dimaond into a sparkling gem!

Folks, I'd like to introduce you to Miss Betty Draper:

I know we're going to be very happy together...

PS For those of you not familiar with the show MAD MEN (it's only the BEST show on television right now--Holy Moley I love it SOOO much!), "Betty Draper" is the wife of the main character and is the quintessential 60s housewife.

Several years ago, Matt and I started making blank sketchbooks from old, discarded kids books, giving them a second life. It's been a pet project for awhile and we've recently been able to source more old books, so we've started an etsy site for The Novel Novel. It's such a shame to let all those good (if not a bit oudated) pages go to waste, so I'm going to start selling the original inside pages for people to use in collages, scrapbooks, etc. As I was trimming down the raw edges from removed pages, I was struck by how lovely the scraps were. I love when beauty pops up in unexpected places.

I've decided the time has come to whittle down my vintage scarf collection as it's currently taking over my closet, so in the next few weeks I'll be posting some real gems. Hopefully this process won't be too painful. Many of them are vintage VERA scarves, which tend to be especially lovely. You'll definitely want to keep a keen eye on my shop if you're just as obesessed with scarves as I am...

I'm an avid fan of apartment living, however, as with many good things, there are a few downsides. One such woe is the general lack of creativity in the fixtures that come with so many cheap apartments. Matt (the wonderful hubby) and I always lament how gross apartment bathrooms can be and the generic, scrubby fixtures in ours are the biggest offenders. We got a hare-brained idea to strip ours down (appropriate bathroom verbage, eh?) and IKEA-ify it a bit. We replaced the towel rack and toilet roll holder, as well as added a tiny shelf and spare roll holder. I'm quite pleased with the results!

Sadly I forgot to take "before" pictures, but just conjure up images of any bland apartment bathroom you've ever visited and you get the basic idea. Here's how it looks now:

My favorite addition is the spare toilet roll holder which is actually an IKEA spice rack that I re-purposed.

It's nice when just a few minor (and cheap!) changes can make a big difference.
